Mud brown met the midnight blue sky in a bold display of perfection, amber orbs narrowed in swift pursuit of the stars. The coat of this beast sparkled with the mornings tear drops, or dew drops and a sly smile toyed on his lips. He was no longer a mere deputy, no, not any longer, now he was leader... he was to be respected. That smile was something that had haunted him for years, hiding behind it a tongue of silver grace. He was excellent at talking his way in... or out of anything.
He lept forward, body close to the ground as he ran, his fur brushing the ground. The prey he stalked was no more than a mere rodent but it would feed a queen, or perhaps an elder. He leapt, narrowly avioding a rock and snagging the small beast, pausing momentarily to listen to the small soul's heartbeat as it raced to get away. The mouses fur was of the same texture and color as the bold leaders, a beautiful lustful shining chocolate brown.
The beastly leader gave a sharp growl and let the rat creature flee into the depths of his dark woods. A frown formed on his lips and he couldnt help but laugh at the stupidity of his actions. He was Adderstar, leader of Shadowclan, and if I might say so, a serious bi - polar creation.

`Sorrowheart
Nearly silent pawsteps could almost be heard in the still night as another cat emerged from the shadows. A gray she-cat, regal in appearance but still with some afterthought of crudeness, stood in a swath of moonlight behind the brown tom. Sorrowheart smirked as the tom scared away the mouse he'd been chasing. What kind of leader are you? Too proud to help your own clan? She thought. Granted, leaf-bare was over, but that was no excuse to be chasing good prey away from Shadowclan. This was plain madness.
"Adderstar...what are you doing?" Sorrowheart voiced her thoughts out loud in a meek tone. If it was any other cat, she would have reprimanded them for losing a perfectly good piece of prey. But this was the clan leader. Him, the deputy, and the medicine cat were the only safe cats from Sorrowheart's sharp tongue. She couldn't risk getting on their bad sides, as much as she hated pretending that she agreed with their decisions. After all, if he couldn't even catch a mouse, what gave Adderstar the right to lead their clan?

Adderstar turned, a smile playing on his lips. Sorrowheart. He said, nodding his head in greeting to the pretty she-cat. His muddy brown fur shimmer a silky silver in the morning light. He glanced at the direction that the mouse ran. Oh, that, He mouthed with a laugh. I just didnt feel it worthy to be eaten by our clan. His tail lashed in amusement at his own actions, though, he was a tad bit angry on the inside.

`Sorrowheart
What's he smiling about? Sorrowheart wondered as Adderstar turned to face her. Does he think it's funny that I'm worried about going hungry? Isn't he? Isn't that a leader's job, to make sure his clan doesn't go hungry? Sorrowheart had never really liked Adderstar that much, even before he was the leader. Now he seemed to be mocking her for her survival instincts. What a mousebrain.
'I just didn't feel it worthy to be eaten by our clan'
Sorrowheart narrowed her eyes. Not worthy? It wasn't crowfood. It was a perfectly good mouse that actually had some meat on its bones, unlike all the ones she'd seen for all of Leaf-bare. Not to mention that it wasn't a slimy toad or a scaly lizard. There was nothing unworthy about a healthy mouse. Sorrowheart didn't voice this out loud, of course, because this was her leader. With a brain like that, he must have done something extraordinary to have become deputy. She thought. "Oh, I see. So you mean the mouse just didn't put up enough of a challenge for us to eat it?" She said in a low voice that was thick with sarcasm.

There was indeed genius to his madness, for that was but a mere cover, this bi polar mask. He hid his true self behind tests, if they liked him like this than he owuld reveal it. So rare indeed, was it that any one saw the true depths of his emotions, the love, the anger, and the loyalness. You laugh, He hissed. The mouse was poisened, Two - Leg contraptions. He growled, raising his head, from the mouses tainted scent. If you had stopped in your accusations against me you would have smelt it.

'You laugh'
Laugh? Sorrowheart would not call this laughing. No. This was not humor. It was fury. This cat expected her to go out and hunt all day long, catch all that she could, then only eat a few morsels and give the rest to the fat, lazy cats that wouldn't go out and hunt for themselves. But he was a different story. He was clan leader. Why should he do the work? Sorrowheart wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't already gorged himself and was just too full to bother with one more mouse.
'The mouse was poisoned. Two-leg contraptions.'
Sorrowheart's smirk-the small one that had been withering away as her anger built up-vanished completely. Oh. That was different. The respect that Adderstar had lost from her began to come back. There was a big difference between letting a mouse go and chasing a poisoned mouse away. I guess he's not so mousebrained after all. Sorrowheart thought. Good. She didn't want to have a mouse-brained leader.
'If you had stopped in your accusations against me you would have smelled it.'
Never mind, the fury was back. Not quite as strongly, but back. What do you mean I could have smelled it!? I only arrived in time to see you letting it go, and from the other direction too! Sorrowheart paused for a moment to collect herself before she spoke. "I beg to differ, Adderstar." She said quietly. "But the mouse was long gone before I could have smelled it." She decided she'd better clear herself out of all the trouble. "And I'm sorry. I shouldn't have accused you of letting it go without waiting for your reasons." Once again, if it was any other cat, they would not have received such a heart-felt apology. Another warrior would probably have just been on the receiving end of a glare.

Adderstar's ears twitched and his muddy brown fur became ruffled by the light breeze. He knew she thought he had merely let the mouse go, and that was foolish, he also had the vague notion that she was still angry with him. Come over here, if you wish to see for yourself. He said, for once giving her the option to have proof. He gestured with his long, slightly fluffy tail, for her to approach the scene.
His ivory sapphire eyes met hers momentarily before he allowed them to fall. He had never much enjoyed looking directly at a she-cat, it made him feel uncomfortable. Perhaps it was their graceful manner. Whatever it was, he tried to aviod it, always glazing his over, right before he looked at them.

'Come over here, if you wish to see for yourself.'
Sorrowheart hated to admit that she'd been wrong, but it seemed inevitable. She took a step forward to where he gestured with his tail, glaring at the ground in front of her feet. She looked up at him again to find that he was looking at her, and their eyes met for a moment. He has very pretty eyes... She thought for a moment. A chill crawled down her spine as she found herself looking into the eyes of a tom. And then it was gone. Adderstar broke the connection hastily, looking a bit embarrassed. It was all good for Sorrowheart. She couldn't bear the idea of falling in love, especially with this mouse-brain.
Sorrowheart peered at the mouse lying on the ground. It looked okay. She leaned in and sniffed the carcass, then quickly brought her nose away with a scowl on her face. "Yep, that's poisoned all right." She said, trying not to gag. "Sorry again, Adderstar." She said. She gave her shoulder a swift lick, realizing that her hackles had raised just from the scent of the mouse. Or was it from earlier, when the two had met each others' eyes?

Sorry again, Adderstar... The words clanged in his head like a drum. One time after another. She was rather beautiful, yes indeed, but he wouldnt let himself dwell upon that matter, for it made him feel out of place. He nodded sharply, acknowledging both parts of her... song. He ran his coarse tongue over her paw, erasing the mouses rank scent from him.
I don't leave my clan starving when it is aviodable. He whisperred, turning around to walk deeper into the forest. And Im not as stupid as you think. He added, beginning his trek through his dark piney woods.

Things were getting awkward. Sorrowheart still felt a bit miffed that she'd been wrong, but her anger was fizzing out. She would never admit, of course, how mousebrained she'd been acting in the first place, throwing out accusations against Adderstar. In her defence, it had looked as if he was just letting it go. And why couldn't he have just said 'it's poisoned' instead of 'it's not worthy'. This world was confusing enough without cats making it worse.
'I don't leave my clan starving when it's avoidable.'
No, Sorrowheart thought, but you leave them confused sometimes. She thought maybe that the latter was worse. Sure, she wasn't starving for food, but rather for knowledge now. Or at least she had been. Now she knew why he'd let the mouse go, but before he'd explained...the gray cat shook her head. She'd rather just let it go then try to work it over in her head.
'And I'm not as stupid as you think'
"I didn't say anything about..." Sorrowheart started to contradict the leader, but then gave up. She knew that he knew how she'd been thinking of him. "Well, that was before I knew it was poisoned, okay?" She lied through her teeth, hoping the leader wouldn't call her bluff. She really didn't want to be on his bad side.

Adderstar smiled at her words, he knew he was confusing, he loved to talk in puzzles. Say that if you wish... He murmured, continueing to walk forward as if he were unphased by the poisened mouse in his territory. His muddy fur shined lusterous silver in the vain light of hells messenger and that just brightened his mood. So, Sorrowheart, do tell me about yourself.

The she-cat knew that her leader didn't believe her. So what, she decided. Why should she care? If Adderstar wanted to hate her, what was she going to do about it? It wouldn't make that much of a difference-her life was already miserable anyways. There wasn't much the leader could do to make it worse.
'So, Sorrowheart, do tell me about yourself.'
Except that. Sorrowheart, who'd been following Adderstar, stopped in her tracks. She narrowed her eyes-it seemed like that was beginning to be their natural position. "What...what do you want to know?" She asked shakily. The question had caught her off guard. Usually she refused to answer questions about her past-she hoped that wasn't what Adderstar wanted to know.

He hid his smile by turning away momentarily. She was great fun to talk to indeed, she seemed smart enough. What do you like? Who do you dislike? Any favorite Apprentice? HE listed off several possible choices, though, her past was what he wanted to know. As a leader, it was none of his buisness, though, he loved to know about his warriors.
Adderstar allowed his amber eyes to raise again, once more meeting her eyes, though, unlike last time he managed to keep them there. He wasnt sure why he could, he just could, it was almost instictive that he looked up at her while he spoke.

'What do you like? Who do you dislike? Any favorite Apprentice?
That was a load of questions. Sorrowheart sighed, and resumed walking. She didn't want to be stuck out here in the forest all night. And walking helped her think. "What do I like?" She repeated the first question out loud. What do I like? She thought. Most cats in Shadowclan would be quick to tell you that she didn't like anything. Sometimes she had to convince herself that they weren't right. She did like some things. "Well, my favorite flower is tansy. I like silence, and I wan-I like kits." The last statement hit her like an enemy warrior that had found her hunting on the wrong side of the border. She'd just caught herself before she'd said 'want'. She did want kits. But she didn't want anybody to know that.
"Who do I dislike?" She said, again repeating the question. Again, most cats would say 'everybody' to this one. Just because she didn't particularly adore anyone, or want to be around anyone, didn't mean she disliked them...did it? "I dislike annoying apprentices, whiny elders..." She turned to eye Adderstar "And nosey cats. And I haven't had an apprentice, and I don't really know any of ours, so I can't answer your last question." When she did this, she noticed that Adderstar was looking into her eyes again. Not into, at. She corrected herself. There was a difference.
She could tell by the look in his eyes that Adderstar was holding something back. Leaving something out. Beating around the bush. Sorrowheart took a deep breath. "Just ask me." She said, resignedly. It was inevitable anyway, and he wanted to know. She just hoped she would be able to talk about her past.
